Preparing for Vein Treatment

Posted on November 7, 2022

If you have never experienced vein treatment, you might wonder exactly what to expect. You are probably curious about what you will need both before and after the procedure. Any type of treatment can cause feelings of anxiety, but we strive to make your experience as seamless as possible. At Varicosity Vein Center, vein treatments are outpatient procedures with minimal side effects. Our vein specialists want to get you back in action as soon as possible. To ensure maximum comfort and efficiency, there are a few things you can do to prepare for your procedure.

Before Vein Treatment

If quick recovery is your goal, follow these helpful instructions before your operation.

  • Drink enough water. This helps to increase blood volume, making veins more prominent and easier for the vein specialist to locate. Drinking plenty of water also helps keep you hydrated throughout the treatment.
  • Make sure you have secured a post-op driver. You will not be able to drive yourself home after the procedure.
  • Avoid taking aspirin or other blood thinners. These blood thinners could cause more bleeding or interfere with agents used during the treatment.
  • Eat and drink normally. Unlike other operations, fasting is not required for your vein treatment.
  • Wear your least favorite undergarments. It might sound silly, but wearing undergarments that you do not highly value is a useful suggestion. When the physician or nurse begins prepping your whole leg for the procedure, you do not want to risk staining your favorite undergarments.
  • Do not wear makeup, perfume, or lotion on the treatment areas. Avoiding these products minimizes the potential for irritation.

What Should I Bring to My Treatment?

Your comfort is Varicosity Vein Center’s number one priority. With that in mind, we do suggest that you bring certain items to reduce any of the normal, minimal discomfort following your operation. These items are explained here:

  • Loose-Fitting Clothing: After treatment, tight clothing could cause extreme discomfort. Loose clothing will provide a smoother ride home by preventing any unnecessary pain.
  • Compression Socks or Compression Stockings: While not ideal, you can expect some bruising after your treatment. You might even notice a bit of pain or swelling, but no major soreness is likely. Compression socks and stockings help blood flow, which in turn reduces swelling. You will need to wear the socks for a few days following your procedure.
  • Headphones for Music, Podcasts, or Audio Books: Vein treatment is not a long procedure, but it is still important to bring some type of soothing distraction for yourself. Listening to music or catching up on your favorite stories decreases anxiety and invites a sense of relaxation.
